Brothers Achieve Full-Time Employment with UPMC

Romeo and Savier Gonzalez, brothers from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, successfully completed a paid work experience, graduated from the Auberle Employment Institute WIOA Out of School program, and secured full-time employment at UPMC Harrisburg, all within a few months.

Their success is admirable, but it did not come without challenges.Despite various barriers, including transportation, housing insecurity, and lack of employment experience, Romeo and Savier were determined to change their trajectory and get themselves on a path to substantial employment.

Romeo, the older of the two brothers, started working with case manager Misty Solorio from Auberle’s Employment Institute in April. As they worked together to identify and address obstacles, Misty was able to provide support and help Romeo explore potential career options.

Romeo indicated an interest in entering the healthcare field and in April interviewed for a spot in a paid work experience at UPMC Harrisburg. After being accepted, Romeo began the four-week experience where he rotated through various roles and departments within the hospital. All of which he excelled in.

If not for Auberle, I would not have had this opportunity. I found a real place for a career. Initially, I was shy, but once I got here (UPMC), everyone was so nice and welcoming that it helped me feel at ease and grow. — Romeo

Upon witnessing his brother’s success, Savier entered the program and began his own journey. Misty worked with Savier and eventually helped him get the same work experience at UPMC Harrisburg. Like his brother, Savier exceeded expectations. He applied for a full-time role in Food & Nutrition Services and was offered the position.

Today, Romeo and Savier both work full-time at UPMC and both love what they do. Romeo holds the highly regarded position of Floor Technician, and Savier works in Food & Nutrition Services where he is now training new hires.
