Employment Institute Success Story: Romeo and Savier
Brothers Achieve Award-Winning Employment with UPMC
Romeo and Savier Gonzalez, brothers from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, successfully completed a paid work experience, graduated from the Auberle Employment Institute WIOA Out of School program, and secured full-time employment at UPMC Harrisburg, all within a few months.
Despite various barriers, including transportation, housing insecurity, and lack of employment experience, Romeo and Savier were determined to change their trajectory and get themselves on a path to substantial employment.
Romeo indicated an interest in entering the healthcare field and in April interviewed for a spot in a paid work experience at UPMC Harrisburg. After being accepted, Romeo began the four-week experience where he rotated through various roles and departments within the hospital. All of which he excelled in.
If not for Auberle, I would not have had this opportunity. I found a real place for a career. Initially, I was shy, but once I got here (UPMC), everyone was so nice and welcoming that it helped me feel at ease and grow. — Romeo
Upon witnessing his brother’s success, Savier entered the program and began his own journey. Misty worked with Savier and eventually helped him get the same work experience at UPMC Harrisburg. Like his brother, Savier exceeded expectations. He applied for a full-time role in Food & Nutrition Services and was offered the position.
April 29, 2026, North Huntingdon, PA — Savier Gonzales receives the Work Experience Participant of the Year Award from the Deputy Director of Auberle's Employment Institute, Jake Markosky. Savier was recognized on stage in front of almost 300 community leaders, staff, and program participants.

Today, Romeo and Savier both work full-time at UPMC and both love what they do. Romeo holds the highly regarded position of Floor Technician, and Savier works in Food & Nutrition Services where he is now training new hires.
Savier continues to break barriers. He recently moved into permanent housing with his fiancé, purchased a vehicle, and was recently recognized for his hard work and dedication by UPMC’s March Employee Spotlight. Savier also passed the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification exam. Savier continues to work on his Employment Goals, and it is paying off. He has received his first promotion from UPMC Harrisburg and has been promoted to the full-time position of Hot Cook (which also came with a significate pay increase).
Savier states that he loves his job, enjoys working with his coworkers, and enjoys the opportunity to help train others. Savier was recently honored with the Work Experience Participant of the Year Award at Auberle's Annual All-Star Banquet on April 29, 2026, in North Huntingdon, PA.
