Steelers As An Education Aid

Volunteers Toni Bucci, Marcy Cendroski, Judy
Kinlough and Elaine Phillips spend Tuesday evenings with the
junior boys helping with homework and building educational
strengths. The challenge is to keep the boys interested while
adding to the learning skills.
| The Steelers road to the Super Bowl was
used in several ways to make learning more fun, beginning
with the spelling of football terms. A lesson in geography
was disguised as "what city do these teams"
come from, what state is the city in and what is the capital
of that state. As a reward, the Steelers beat Cincinnati. |
 |
| Next came crossword puzzles using football
terminology. Extra points were given if the terms were
spelled correctly. The children where again rewarded with
a Steelers victory over Indianapolis. |
 |
| With Super Bowl fever mounting, it was
on to Steelers math. By using Steeler player numbers,
the junior boys solved math problems. For example, if
you add Jerome Bettis and Chris Hope, what do you get
(hint: 36 + 28 = 64). The boys added, subtracted, multiplied
and divided various jersey numbers. The payoff was a Steelers
victory against Denver. |
 |
The
boys were competitive, respectful and attentive, all the while
they were learning. The tutors treated the junior unit to
a pre-Super Bowl party, complete with food, drinks, prizes
and AFC Conference Championship pennants donated by a local
Dollar Store.
