| On
Monday, June 4, 2007, Auberle hosted its first ever
spelling bee. 22 children participated. Prizes were
awarded for the first, second, third, and fourth place
finishers.
The
spelling bee was held in the Program Center of the main
campus. It began at 6 PM and lasted a remarkable 11
rounds before the winner was determined.
Each
participant was given two chances to make it to the
final spot – each child was given a so-called
second chance pass. The pass, which could be used only
once, excused a misspelled word and allowed another
chance to advance. Kids also received a one-time only
"different word" pass. The children could
ask for another word if they couldn't spell the one
they were given.
Initially,
all of the children were given two minutes to come up
with their answer, but as the night progressed, the
time was gradually reduced to 30 seconds.
The
idea for the spelling bee came from long-time Auberle
volunteer Marcy Cendroski. In addition to Marcy, three
other volunteer tutors, Toni Bucci, Carol School, and
Judy Kinlough, all helped to organize the night and
helped during the event. Special thanks to them and
to all of the staff who made the night such a success.
This
year’s first place winner was Amado. Second place
went to Zach, third went to Javon, and fourth place
was awarded to Alex, 14. We congratulate all of the
children for the effort that they put into the preparation
for the spelling bee. Everyone who took part can walk
away knowing that you don’t have to be in first
place to feel like a winner.
The
children, staff, and volunteers are all looking forward
to the 2nd Annual Spelling Bee next year.
